At 200 amps, the choice of electrodes is crucial. Stock up on rods and blister-pack electrodes of the right diameter, and keep them dry. Single-phase or three-phase at 200 amps?
The choice of power supply is decisive for a 200A arc welding machine. Most modern Inverter models operate on a simple single-phase 230 V socket, making them usable anywhere, including at home. Be careful, however: at full power, a single-phase 200A MMA machine puts a heavy load on the electrical network and requires a properly sized installation (appropriate circuit breaker, sufficient cable cross-section). For very intensive industrial use, a three-phase version offers better stability and a higher duty cycle. Check the availability of three-phase power in your workshop before deciding.
TIG Lift: added versatility
Many 200 Amp arc welding machines include a TIG Lift function, which enables TIG welding by contact striking, simply by adding a TIG torch and an argon cylinder. This versatility transforms an MMA machine into a two-in-one tool, capable of switching between electrode repairs and cleaner finishing work on stainless steel or thin steel. If you are hesitating between buying an MMA machine and a TIG machine, a 200A MMA machine with TIG Lift is an excellent compromise to get started without multiplying your equipment. Keep in mind, however, that TIG Lift, which strikes by contact, does not offer all the features of a dedicated TIG machine (HF striking, pulsed current, AC aluminium welding). For occasional TIG use on steel and stainless steel, it is very useful; for regular and demanding TIG work, it is better to invest in a specialised machine. The right choice depends, once again, on the share each process represents in your actual activity.
